May 2023: Harbottle & Lewis tax partner Gary Ashford has been appointed as president of the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) – the leading UK body for taxation professionals – for 2023-24.
A former tax inspector at HMRC, Gary has been a council member of the CIOT since 2011, and is chair of the CIOT/Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) Crypto Assets Working Group. Gary was also vice president of the CIOT for 2022-23.
With extensive experience in the financial services and media and technology industries, Gary has particular expertise supporting international and non-domicile clients with their tax affairs and planning, specialising in complex offshore structures.
He is a leading International tax expert, working on private and corporate cross border matters. He is also an expert on international and domestic tax disputes, investigations and other contentious tax matters, as well as international exchange of information agreements and powers. He is ranked Band 1 in Chambers and Partners. Gary is also expert on the digital economy and crypto/digital assets, advising clients on tax considerations related to cryptocurrency and assets as well as wider DeFi matters.
